Most standard two-horse trailers typically weigh between 750kg and 1,200kg unladen (empty). However, the exact weight depends on the make, model, and materials used - lighter aluminium trailers tend to be at the lower end, while larger or more feature-packed trailers (with living space or tack storage) can weigh more.

Most horse trailers have a payload between 1,000kg and 1,800kg, depending on the model and its unladen weight. The payload is the maximum weight the trailer can safely carry - including horses, tack, water, and equipment - and is calculated by subtracting the trailer's empty weight from its maximum gross weight.

In the UK, most drivers can tow a horse trailer on a standard car licence, but it depends on when you passed your test. If you passed on or after 1 January 1997, you can tow a trailer up to a combined vehicle and trailer weight of 3,500kg (known as the MAM limit), unless you take an additional B+E test for heavier combinations. If you passed before 1 January 1997, you usually have B+E entitlement automatically, meaning you can tow heavier trailers without extra testing.
