Frequently Asked Questions About Horse Trailers

How much does a horse trailer weigh?

Most standard two-horse trailers typically weigh between 750kg and 1,200kg unladen (empty). However, the exact weight depends on the make, model, and materials used - lighter aluminium trailers tend to be at the lower end, while larger or more feature-packed trailers (with living space or tack storage) can weigh more.

What's the payload of a horse trailer?

Most horse trailers have a payload between 1,000kg and 1,800kg, depending on the model and its unladen weight. The payload is the maximum weight the trailer can safely carry - including horses, tack, water, and equipment - and is calculated by subtracting the trailer's empty weight from its maximum gross weight.

For more on how payload works and what affects it, see our Understanding Horsebox Weights and Payloads guide - the principles of unladen weight, gross weight and usable payload apply to trailers too.

Can I tow a trailer on my driving licence?

In the UK, most drivers can tow a horse trailer on a standard car licence, but it depends on when you passed your test. If you passed on or after 1 January 1997, you can tow a trailer up to a combined vehicle and trailer weight of 3,500kg (known as the MAM limit), unless you take an additional B+E test for heavier combinations. If you passed before 1 January 1997, you usually have B+E entitlement automatically, meaning you can tow heavier trailers without extra testing.

Our Horsebox Driving Licence Requirements in the UK article covers the full breakdown of licence categories, including towing entitlements.
