A 3.5-tonne horsebox can usually be driven on a standard UK car licence (Category B) and suits one or two horses. It's compact, economical, and easy to park.

A 7.5-tonne horsebox needs a Category C1 licence, offers more payload, and often includes living accommodation - ideal for longer trips, shows, or carrying multiple horses.

That depends on how and where you travel. A horse trailer is towed, cheaper to buy and run, and perfect if you already have a suitable towing vehicle. A horsebox is a self-contained vehicle - more comfortable for longer journeys, with better visibility and often on-board tack or living areas.

Before purchasing a horsebox, lorry, or trailer, always:

• Check the MOT, service history, and mileage.
• Inspect the floor, ramp, partitions, and electrics for wear or damage.
• Confirm the payload and make sure it's within your horses' combined weight.
• For trailers, inspect brakes, hitch, and tyres.
• Ask for proof of ownership and verify the VIN or chassis number.
