Used 12t Horseboxes for Sale in the UK

A 12.0 tonne horsebox and a 12.0 ton horsebox both refer to the same weight class vehicle, but the wording depends on country:

• Tonne (metric tonne) - used in the UK and Europe
• 1 tonne = 1,000 kg
• The correct term for horseboxes in the UK is usually 12.0 tonne
• Ton (imperial ton) - used mainly in the USA
• 1 ton = 907 kg
• Not generally used in UK vehicle classifications

Because horseboxes in the UK are regulated using metric measurements, a 12.0 tonne horsebox is the accurate term for listings, insurance, road tax, driving licence rules, and DVLA documentation.

You need a Category C (HGV) licence to drive a 12 tonne horsebox. A standard Category B car licence only covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg, and even C1 entitlement (which covers up to 7,500 kg) is not sufficient for a 12t lorry.

Obtaining a Category C licence requires a medical examination, a theory test (including the hazard perception element) and a practical driving assessment in a vehicle over 7,500 kg. You must already hold a Category B licence before applying.

If you plan to tow a trailer behind a 12t horsebox, you will need C+E entitlement, which requires a further practical test.
